Listening to Compost & Micro-organisms.
Microscope inspired visions.
I spent several hours fascinated peering through a microscope and capturing digital frames animating focus and position of prepared slides tiny slivers of animal organs, plant tissue from roots stems and leaves including Corn,Fern ,Helianthus, Marchantia polymorpha(liverwort), algae and bacteria. This video imagines being able to simultaneously see through multiple layers of cells all at once. The title refers to these replicating, interacting and diversifying cells that are the food of life and also are in fact food for each other. In the community of life of plants and animals, including ourselves, everything is naturally food at some point in their life-cycle. The music attempts to create the sense of multiple rhythms and energy interacting with each other.
My next experiment was to combine this form of image capture with other methods for greater interaction and audiovisual biodiversity. -following on from "Food of Life" which was entirely made with microscope imagery, this short film blends basic microscopy images with basic computer synthesis of noise and cellular like patterns as well as more analogue basic stop-motion "under-camera' silhouettes of leaves and sand. "WARMTH".(30 seconds excerpts from slightly longer short film) is perhaps 'about; The warmth generated by microbes. The warmth of a hug or friend’s reassuring words. The warmth of home and gentle winter sun. The warmth of connections to place and all living things.
