BODY OF NATURE

Picture
“Body of Nature”  suspended sculpture, approximately 1 metre by 60 cm, constructed of wire, cotton thread, black wattle, wild apple tree prunings,  roots and young branches, casuarina seed pods, dried passionfruit seed pod, shaped eucalypt , casuarina, and acacia tree slices.
This construction is an experiment in creating a multi-level mobile that  could represent many things.
On my mind at the time of making it was ideas of  bringing together the best of atomistic reductionist science thinking with genuine holistic
feeling, observing, thinking and acting as respectfully to the body of nature that we are all part of. The usual metaphors of mobiles being about balance are of course also relevant. The messy connecting threads are also obvious metaphors of the inseparable threads that bind all living things and even perhaps literal representations of fungal threads, veins ,rivers that sustain and connect living places and lifeforms. Finally a suspended sculpture such as this could be referred to  as ‘dreamcatcher’ and or ‘spiderweb catcher’!  I hope that if this mobile was to live for a while in a semi-protected area with other hanging plants, that spiders and other insects would happily make this structure another of their homes and add to the threads and web of life representations and eventual complete transformation of the sculpture with their great skills and industry.
