Week Two of Kindred Studios Residency for West Projection Festival. I have found many fascinating walks from Kindred Studios into Footscray or across to Spotswood. The apartment block sized towers of containers and the cranes that move them and the Yarraville Oil Terminal keep turning up in my wandering photos and strike me as excellent but no doubt completely impractical ( and most likely prohibited) sites for projection works .. but I could not resist creating some messy images on these locations in the virtual domain. heres two for instance; Walking Tree... Always was, always will be....
The start of Week 2 already !--- survived my main project hard drive complete crash last week-after several hours of trouble shooting/desperation found a way to copy the files off--just a quick two day process! On the brighter side had three great visitors last week, Klare Lanson, Anthony Lyons and Annie Murray- look forward to what and whoever happens this week and getting busy making and wondering about what Im making :) Kindred Studios was abuzz with the energy and excitement of three hundred or so Musicians for APRA's Melbourne Music Sessions. I have studio time booked in here for some new audiovisual performance related research and development for West Projections outcome at Kindred Studios which will be a great opportunity to test some ideas for bending field recordings of image and sound into imaginative hybrid forms.
Capturing many images and sounds of Footscray lots of large layered landscapes of culture, industry, nature and history all at once...also fascinated with detail such as the hidden world inside the so called "concrete jungle" Met with the super helpful Studio Manager, Dhanesh, set up my co working deskspace, walked around and took in the views of the beautiful park across the road, the container docks, and the numerous interesting co-tennants in the building. My first collaborator Klare Lanson visited and we cooked up some exciting plans for projection film and or live performance. Photos first early morning coffee, and co-working space set up..
My new album Release "SwampLakeCity" is nearly finished and will be the result of eight years of
creature and environment soundscape recording and making plus hundreds of regional commuter train-trip lap-top experiments and home instrument making. This will be released by Naviar Records, known for their 5 years of weekly Haiku sound responses- you can download Naviar's current release selected from the last 5 years & 56 ! composers sonic Haiku's here
One of the highlights of 2018 for me was responding to the theme of Horizon, proposed by curator Molly-Jo Braddon for Bendigo’s Enlighten Projection Festival
It was an absolute blast to work with, and special thanks to, Richard J Frankland, who in a very short time turned my bunch of words into a song with his great vocal and guitar style. I have now finally re-edited all the projection footage into a 5 minute film ready for screenings in 2019(hopefully!), In the new (and final?) edit I’ve added more visual elements and layers, which in my mind, enhance the cosmic/vj, interconnection of all peoples and places, represented in the lyrics. This is 1 minute of excerpts from the 5 minute song, soundscape and animation. |
